Dance is one of 10 artistic disciplines in YoungArts' national competition. This discipline encompasses all dance forms. Applicants may either be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident/green card recipient, or someone who can demonstrate that they are legally able to receive taxable income in the United States. Applicants must also be in grades 10-12 or 15-18 years of age on December 1 of the year they are applying. YoungArts welcomes applications from dancers who demonstrate the understanding of the foundational principles and technical components of their chosen form, while showing emotion, telling a story and connecting to the audience through movement. All submissions must be recorded within the last year. Applicants must submit a digital video recording of a two-minute selection of movements that demonstrate technique, skill, practice, rehearsal and/or phrase work of the dance form the applicant is submitting. Applicants must also submit a digital video recording of a two-minute solo piece of their choice in the dance form they are submitting, with a clear beginning and ending. Dancers who create their own original work must submit the Choreography category requirements. Two separate pieces are required. The first selection must be a solo piece where the applicant is the dancer. The second selection must feature a minimum of two and a maximum of five dancers. Pieces should be from 2-5 minutes in length. Total submission should not exceed 8 minutes. The applicant must be the lead choreographer for both selections. Please visit the award's website for more information about the competition and the required materials.
