The John R. Coleman Traveling Fellowship will be awarded to be used for travel and study in Italy, the western Mediterranean, or North Africa, between July 1 of the award year and the following June 30. Applicants must be current AIA members at the graduate or professional level. The recipient should remain a member until the end of the fellowship term and subsequent submission of an abstract and/or presentation at the annual meeting. Applicants must be engaged in dissertation research in a U.S. graduate program. Applicants must submit two letters of reference from persons familiar with them and their work. The Fellowships Committee attaches the greatest importance to the applicant's detailed statement of the proposed project. It is important that applicants define the questions being explored and for applicants to state their goals and methodology as well as the relationship between the two. The committee is also looking for evidence of the scholarly significance and feasibility of the proposal. Additionally, the committee is interested in the applicant's itinerary and it is helpful if the applicant includes background information outlining the reasons for visiting these locations in the summary statement. It is also important to indicate that the applicant has begun to seek the necessary permissions required by many countries and museums to work with their materials.
