The Gertrude B. Elion Mentored Medical Student Research Award will provide annual awards to support women medical students who are interested in pursuing health-related research projects. Students must have an interest in health research, and must have the support of a faculty mentor. This award is restricted to medical students who have completed at least one year of study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine or are enrolled in NC State's Combined DVM/PhD Degree. Applicants must submit a sponsor's statement of nomination, which must present the institution's reasons for nominating the student, verify that they meet the award's eligibility requirements and describe the expected impact of the award on the candidate's research or training. NC State Combined DVM/PhD applicants must submit a letter from their department stating they are enrolled in the combined program. The candidate's curriculum vitae and the mentor's curriculum vitae are also required. Applicants must also submit their research plan, which should include three components: a scientific abstract provided by the mentor; a description of the proposed research that the student will be working on and the student's specific role in the project provided also by the mentor; and a statement describing her career objectives and the expected impact of the award provided by the student. The budget must explain in general terms how the award will be spent. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from someone other than the mentor, who is familiar with their qualifications. Please visit the scholarship's website or contact the Triangle Community Foundation for more information.
