Founded in 1743 as a small private academy, the University of Delaware became a state land-grant institution in 1870 and adopted coeducation in 1872. Its 1,000-acre campus is located in Newark, 12 miles from Wilmington, 30 miles from Philadelphia, and 50 miles from Baltimore.
