The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a public, land-grant institution. Founded in 1863, it is consistently ranked among the top public research universities in the nation. Within its nine schools and colleges, the university offers bachelor''s degrees in more than 85 areas, as well as associate, masters, and doctoral degrees. Through its membership in the Five Colleges Consortium, students can enroll at no extra charge in courses at nearby Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges. Its 1,463-acre campus is located in Amherst, 90 miles west of Boston.
