The University of Maine, founded in 1865, is a public, land-grant institution. It is the most prestigious university in the state, offering more than 80 undergraduate degree programs in one of the most pristine recreational areas of the northeast. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Business, Public Policy, Health, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Natural Resources, Forestry, and Agriculture. Its 9,000 students come from 42 states and over 70 nations for professional and liberal arts programs in five undergraduate colleges. University of Maine's costs are considered very competitive - less than $20,000 per year for nonresidents - due to strong state support and careful budgeting. Its 3,300-acre main campus is located in Orono, eight miles north of Bangor.
