Oakland University, founded in 1957, is a public, comprehensive university. Its average class size numbers fewer than 30 students, and 98% are taught by regular faculty rather than teaching assistants. There are many opportunities for undergraduates to be involved in research projects. Oakland's internationally renowned Eye Research Institute is the only major research center in the U.S. not associated with a medical school. Oakland has major institutes and centers in wellness, biochemistry technology and international studies. In 1999, several new laboratories opened, including the EDS Software Verification and Testing Lab and the Product Development and Manufacturing Center. The university also has an active interdisciplinary Honors College. Its 1,444-acre campus is located in Rochester, 25 miles north of downtown Detroit.
