The Dean Franklin Young Investigator Award has been established by Harvard Bioscience in recognition of Franklin's role in the development of instrumentation to monitor physiological function in conscious research animals. Concepts originally formulated by Dean Franklin continue to serve as the inspiration behind many of Harvard Bioscience most technologically advanced physiological monitoring systems developed for today's nonclinical research. The award has been established to recognize a post-doctoral scientist or junior faculty member who is pursuing in vivo physiological research and is in the process of establishing an independent laboratory. Applicants must hold a rank of postdoctoral scientist or junior faculty member. Applicants must be an APS member in good standing for two consecutive years at the time of application. U.S. residency is not required. The application package includes a description of current and/or prospective research program, highlighting its relevance to the intent of the award; description of how the DSI equipment will be used in the research program; description of anticipated path to independence; NIH-style biosketch; list of current and pending grant support not included in biosketch; copy of abstract(s) submitted to for presentation at the APS annual meeting; one letter of recommendation from department chair, administrator or mentor; and one letter of support discussing the applicant's research program.
