The NCAIS Graduate Student Research Grants is a short-term fellowship providing one to two months of research support at any point during the year to graduate students from Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies working on projects related to American Indian and Indigenous Studies. NCAIS Graduate Student Research Grants can be used to fund any type of research, including in archives, libraries, and other institutions, as well as collaborative research with Native communities. Research trips may include time at the Newberry but that is not required. Continuing graduate students from institutions participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies may apply. Applicants must be returning graduate students in the year that they will use the research award. Awards will not be made to graduate students who will have graduated ahead of the award period. A project abstract describing the significance of the project and a project description elaborating on the abstract and referencing specific published scholarship that the project will engage with are required. The description should also explain the relevance of certain Newberry collection materials to the project and include a plan of work. Letters of Recommendation, in English, that speak to the scholarly contribution of the proposed project, the value of a Newberry residency to the applicant, and the qualifications of the applicant. Short-term fellowships also require two letters of recommendation. Please visit the fellowship's website for more information.
