The University of Notre Dame, founded in 1842, is a church-affiliated, comprehensive university. It seeks to be the world's foremost Catholic university. Its 1,250-acre campus, with a dominant Victorian Gothic architectural style, is located in Notre Dame, five miles outside South Bend.
