The University of Colorado at Boulder, founded in 1876, is a comprehensive, public university. It is a major research and teaching university located in one of the most spectacular environments in the country, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture and Planning, Arts and Sciences, Business and Administration, Engineering and Applied Science, and Music; and the Schools of Education, and Journalism and Mass Communication. Ranking second among all public universities in overall research expenditures per faculty member, the university offers tremendous academic diversity, with the faculty committed to bringing their research into the classroom. Students may participate in honors programs, undergraduate research programs and several academic residential programs. A diverse student body, a large number of student clubs and activities, as well as access to the state's capital, Denver, add to the appeal of the university. Its 600-acre campus is located in Boulder, 27 miles northwest of Denver.
