Founded in Birmingham, Ala., more than 150 years ago, Birmingham-Southern College is one of the nation's best liberal arts colleges, providing an educational experience that develops students mentally, physically, and morally, and prepares them for successful careers. Over 50 percent of Birmingham-Southern students go on to graduate school. Birmingham-Southern is looking for motivated, hard-working, and creative students who thrive under the challenges of academic rigor and extracurricular involvement. We require an application for admission, including a personal statement and record of the student's academic achievements. For students whose first language is not English, we require evidence of English language ability.

What the School Says...

Birmingham-Southern is more affordable than you might think. Our Financial Aid staff works with students and their families to meet each student's individual needs. More than 95 percent of our students receive some kind of aid, including scholarships, loans, grants, and work-study opportunities. More than 75 percent of all freshmen qualify for Achievement Scholarships, which reward first-year students for both scholarly achievement and extracurricular involvement. The Achievement Scholarships are based on a complete review of the student's admissions application (no additional application form is required for consideration). We look at a variety of criteria including standardized test scores, GPA, class rank, leadership potential, and engagement and accomplishments outside the classroom. The Achievement Scholarships are renewable annually for up to three years provided the recipient maintains full-time status and the required GPA. Students who are National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Scholars, and National Hispanic Scholars receive additional annual renewable scholarships of up to $2,000.

Birmingham-Southern has a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 16 students. One hundred percent of our classes are taught by professors, not teaching assistants. Students work closely with professors who advise them, guide them, and even help them craft their own majors. Our innovative curriculum develops the skills and abilities desired by employers, enabling our graduates to succeed in the workforce. Our outstanding pre-professional programs in medicine, law, and education prepare students for a variety of graduate programs. More than 50 percent of our graduates go on to achieve higher education. During our unique January Exploration Term we expand learning outside the classroom walls. Attend a film festival, tackle a service project in the inner city, work with a scientist, put on a play, or travel overseas with faculty experts, those are just a few options for your "e-term." Life is good on the Hilltop! At Birmingham-Southern, you get the best of both worlds: a small college experience with all the advantages of the big city. Your college years are about more than academics. There's the atmosphere on campus and the friendships you make. It's a totally new beginning. With more than 80 student organizations and 23 NCAA Division III men's and women's intercollegiate teams, getting involved at BSC is easy. Birmingham, known as one of the nation's "Most Livable Cities," is rich with recreational, athletic, cultural, and entertainment options, as well as many internship opportunities. It is home to a minor league baseball team, a stop on the famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, and a slew of outdoor recreational opportunities, including yoga at Railroad Park, biking at Oak Mountain State Park, and riding the zip line at Red Mountain Park. The city hosts the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which highlights the city's pivotal role in modern human rights; a top-notch symphony, art museum, ballet, and opera; and an annual film festival. Dozens of venues host popular and classical music, local theatre, and traveling shows. A thriving restaurant scene boasts everything from barbecue joints and cafes to Gourmet magazine's pick for fifth best restaurant in America!

Fifty percent of Birmingham-Southern graduates go on to pursue graduate study. In the past 12 years, we have had six Rhodes Scholars and six Truman Scholars. Our seniors go on to some of the nation's top graduate schools and our students have an 80 percent acceptance rate to medical school and other health-related programs. Recent graduates have landed some of the coolest jobs out there, from filmmaking in Hollywood to the halls of Congress to top corporations and nonprofits around the globe.
