Colorado College, founded in 1874, is a private, liberal arts college. Its Block Plan creates several philosophical and functional distinctions. During a block, students take a class from a professor who teaches only one class. Classes are small (typically 15 students) permitting intense discussion, collaborative research and scholarship. The 90-acre campus'' location at the foot of the Rocky Mountains reflects a western campus spirit: creative, risk-taking and independent. The fine arts center of Colorado Springs is located adjacent to the campus, and students can attend most events free. The combination of location and schedules permits extensive field study, with over 40% of Colorado College students taking field trips for class.
