CollegeData - Registering for the SAT Subject Tests

Registering for the SAT Subject Tests

The SAT Subject Tests provide additional proof of your academic strengths. Here are the 2018–2019 registration deadlines, test dates, and fees to help you plan ahead.

If you want to demonstrate your ability to excel in a particular subject area, the SAT Subject Tests are for you. Here are some tips for registering:

  1. Make a test-taking plan. The College Board administers the SAT Subject Tests on the same dates as the SAT, although not all tests are offered on every date. There are also restrictions on how many tests you can take at one time, so you'll need to plan carefully. You can take no more than three subject tests on the same test date, and only one of these can be a Language Test with Listening. You cannot take any Subject Tests on the same day you take the SAT.
  2. Register and submit a photo. Registering online at collegeboard.org is the easiest and fastest way to register, but you can also register by mail. With both methods, you will need to submit a photo, which must meet specific requirements. (If your photo doesn't meet the requirements, you may not be allowed to test.) Registration deadlines fall about four weeks before the test date. It is possible to register past the registration deadline, but you will incur additional fees.
  3. Pay your fees or apply for fee waivers. The registration fee is $26 plus an additional $22 for each test you take, except for the Language Tests with Listening, which are $26 each. Fee waivers are available for students who qualify.

Your Subject Test Scores and Score Reports

Your scores will be available online about two weeks after you take the test. You may receive your scores by phone for a fee of $15. The College Board will send your scores to up to four colleges free of charge. The fee for each additional college is $12.

Students who plan to take any of the Subject Tests more than once may be able to have only their best scores sent to a college. If you do not specify this option (called Score Choice) when you register for the Subject Tests, the College Board will send all of your scores to your colleges. Be aware that some colleges require applicants to send their entire SAT Subject Test history. For more information, check with the College Board.
