Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, founded in 1957, is a public, comprehensive university. Its art therapy program is the only one of its kind in St. Louis. The School of Nursing and the music and psychology departments are very competitive and have excellent reputations. The music department has recently expanded and offers a state-of-the-art recording studio and acoustically sound rehearsal rooms. The School of Nursing recently approved a degree program offering a master''s for nurse practitioners. SIUE is the only St. Louis-area university to offer a textbook rental program for undergraduate students. A third residence hall is scheduled to open fall 2001, increasing on-campus living space for 500 additional students. The new engineering building opened in fall 2000. SIUE''s 2,660-acre campus is located in Edwardsville, 18 miles southwest of St. Louis.
