Hampshire, founded in 1965, is a private, liberal arts college featuring an interdisciplinary curriculum instead of single-discipline classes, student-designed concentrations instead of predetermined majors, and narrative evaluations instead of letter grades. Hampshire belongs to the Five Colleges Consortium, through which students may take classes at neighboring Smith College, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, and University of Massachusetts. Its 800-acre campus is located in Amherst, 90 miles west of Boston.
