Alderson-Broaddus, a church-affiliated, liberal arts college, was founded in 1871 as Broaddus College. In 1932 it merged with Alderson Junior College and adopted its present name. The 170-acre campus is located in Philippi, near the location of the first land battle of the Civil War.
