The University of Washington, founded in 1861, is a public, comprehensive institution. It is the premier research institution north of Berkeley, California and west of Minnesota. UW has earned an international reputation for its research in such fields as Asian languages and literature, cell biology, computer science, forestry, international studies, nursing and physics. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture and Urban Planning, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Forest Resources; and the Schools of Business Administration, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and Community Medicine, and Social Work. The 703-acre campus, graced by Collegiate Gothic architecture, meandering paths and immaculately landscaped grounds, is one of the most beautiful in the U.S. yet is located in a residential section of Seattle five miles from downtown. A UW education offers a daily education in Pacific Rim politics, economics and culture. Washington's state economy is more dependent on trade than that of any other state in the U.S., and it shows in the local food, local products and the courses taught at UW. Undergraduates are encouraged to take full advantage of UW's superb faculty, libraries (ranked among the top 15 in the U.S.), computing resources, labs, scientific equipment and research projects. The UW student population reflects the ethnicity of the state: three in ten undergraduates are students of color, of which two-thirds are Asian-American. The undergraduate population is composed of 85% Washington residents, with most of the nonresident population hailing from the Far West.
