Registering for the ACT

Planning to take the ACT? Here are the registration deadlines, test dates, and fees for the 2017–2018 academic year.

The first step in preparing for the ACT college admission test is to register for it. Here are some tips to help you plan ahead.

  1. Register online as early as possible. You must register at least five weeks before your preferred test date. The chart below includes upcoming test dates and registration deadlines. Registering online at is the fastest and easiest way to register. From your online account, you can print your admission ticket, make changes to your registration, and view your scores as soon as they are available. Some students are required to register by mail (see the ACT website for details). You can obtain a mail registration packet from your school counselor or at
  2. Submit a photo. You must submit a photo of yourself no later than one week before the day of the test. You may upload photos from your computer, from a mobile device, or send a paper copy by mail. The complete photo submission guidelines are on
  3. Find out if you need to take the Writing Test. Some colleges require scores from the optional Writing Test. You can register for this test along with the ACT. It is offered on the same dates as the regular ACT test.
  4. Pay your fees or apply for a fee waiver. The registration fee for the ACT is $42.50 for the test without writing and $58.50 for the test with writing. The fee covers the cost of sending your scores to up to four colleges (additional colleges are $12 per school). For a complete list of additional fees, as well as more information about registration, fee waivers, and the test itself, visit the ACT website.

Your ACT Scores and Score Reports

Scores are generally available online about two and a half weeks after the test date. The score report will include your scores for each test section and your combined score. If you take the test multiple times, you can send a college only the scores from your best test date. But be aware that some colleges may want to see scores from all your test dates.

Once you've registered for the ACT, you can sit back, relax, and start studying! Good luck!
